The East Colfax Cultural District would like to introduce one of our long-existing East Colfax businesses on the corridor. Meet Karren Hall- the owner of Cuttin-up Beauty Academy on East Colfax! The business, located at 8101 E Colfax Ave, Denver, CO 80220, has been in the neighborhood for 26 years. Karren was inspired to open her shop on East Colfax due to the traffic of the corridor which brings accessibility and familiarity for potential customers. She has been helping young men and women pursue a career in becoming cosmetologists, barbers, hair stylists, manicurists, and estheticians while providing beauty and hair salon services to the community. The academy offers a 10-month program and new classes start every other month.
The biggest success of Cuttin’ Up Beauty Academy in their history has been producing talented individuals in the beauty and salon business along with being able to produce more job opportunities. The owners of Supreme Style, Rose’s House of Beauty, and Expertise Cuts are all graduates from her academy, having opened up their own beauty and barber salons in East Colfax.
It has not just been rainbows and sunshine, however: Karren’s biggest challenge is providing financial aid to her students and marketing her business to increase traffic. Undeterred by all difficulties, Karren still pushes on to create a better future for her business and community. Some of her advice for new business owners is to have a good business plan, enough working capital to survive business volatility, and never give up even when it gets difficult.
One of the fun facts about Cuttin’ Up Beauty Academy is that they provide meals to the homeless each year, to over 100 people for 11 years and going. They also provide free haircuts to students for back to school, for children who are 15 years old and under. She has built a genuine bond with the community for years through her business and giving back. Karren also mentioned that her favorite spot on East Colfax is 7 Leguas and that she enjoys spending time there during their happy hours!
